Opportunity Kitchen

a virtual table for conversations about nonprofit life

What do you need right now?

It’s been a long time since I’ve wanted to write here. Somewhere between life getting in the way and the ongoing unprecedented, once-in-a-generation events that have become routine, I decided I didn’t have anything valuable to add to the “conversation.” (Whatever that means.)

However, we’re facing new challenges in our sector, and it feels more important than ever to have conversations about the wellbeing of nonprofit workforces. Let’s do this.

As a human working in a mission-driven space, what do you need right now? Mental health resources? More funding? A little extra support from your boss or your Board? Someplace to scream into the void without scaring your neighbors?

Personally, all of the above.

This morning, during our all staff meeting, my Executive Director held space for our team to share how we were feeling. It was a thoughtful, simple act that made us feel safe to show up to work with those feelings. We’ve been really focused on how our community is feeling. It was helpful to acknowledge the feelings we are bringing to the equation as well.

We’re facing an uphill trek friends. We’re going to need to rest and hydrate to make it through.

I’m going to try and post here every week with something that – hopefully – will help us keep trekking. Let me know what YOU need. I’ll see what I can do.

In the meantime, here are a few old posts with some of the things I need right now:
